この1年間はILH幼稚部にとって、様々な意味で歴史的にも大きな1年でした。園児の数も最も多く、夏には大規模な改築工事も行われました。これらは、外から見ても私たちが成長しているという明確な証です。こうした園の中で、子どもたち一人一人は本当に変化し、そして成長してきました。
ランゲージ・ハウスの教育理念や哲学は日本にある他の学校とは異なります。私が他の学校の先生たちに、私たちの学校はバイリンガルであると説明すると、皆一様に驚きを表します。バイリンガル教育は現在非常に重要視されていますが、このようなシステムは日本にはまだあまりメジャーではありません。この園で私たちは、生徒たち一人一人に日本人としての感覚や誇りを植え付けるとともに、異なる文化に目を向け、世界に対する興味を植え付けていけるよう日々努力しています。そして私たちはこれが子どもたち一人一人にとって現代のグローバル社会の中でうまく生き抜いていくためには必要だと信じています。
この教育において私が経験してきた結果は大変驚くべきものでした。子どもたちはそれぞれの自覚とクラスメイトへの純真な気遣い、そして環境の変化に対して熱心な反応をいつも見せてくれます。英会話においては、日々経験したものをそれぞれが自分の形で実践しようとしてくれます。常に完璧な表現ではありませんが、完全を私たちは求めているわけではありません。自信を持って発することの方がより大事なことであり、この学校の財産になります。
この第1期クラスはこの先続いていく全てのクラスの原型でありお手本となるクラスです。このクラスの生徒たちは世界の新しい物事に対し、興奮と熱心さを持ちながら向き合うことのできる心と経験を持っています。それと同時に社会性を持ち、他の子どもたちのお兄さん、お姉さんとしてしっかりと面倒をみてくれていました。この日本人としての思いやりの心は近年の若者の中では薄れてきていると言われますが、この素晴らしい環境の元、まだまだしっかりと花開いていることを見ることができて大変嬉しく思います。
先生として、生徒たちがこの巣から去っていってしまうのを見ることは悲しいです。このランゲージ・ハウスで経験したことよりもさらに多くのことが彼らを待っており、それは私にはコントロールすることができないことでもあります。私はただ彼らがここで学んだことをしっかりと深く自分のものとして吸収し、それが失われることなく今後の人生を過ごす上での道標となってくれることを願っています。そしてご両親達が、この先のまだ見えない道をしっかりとサポートして導いてくれると確信しています。
サクラコ、コウヘイ、ミミア、みんな今つぎのステップへ上がる準備はできています。ここランゲージ・ハウスで学んだことを決して忘れないでください。ILHに初めて登園した日を覚えていますか？それから成長していると思いますか？私はその答えがyesだとはっきり言えます。これから素晴らしく、そして大きな世界へ旅立つ君たちの将来はとても輝いています。

2015 ILH Kinder Graduation Speech

This last year has been a big one for the International Language House Kindergarten. It is historical in many ways. The enrollment was by far higher than it’s ever been; in the summer we underwent a huge renovation. Yet, these are just signs of growth which are visible from the outside. Within these walls, there has been profound change and growth as seen in every student here at ILH.
The main tenets of Language House and our philosophy are unlike that of other schools in Japan. When I explain to other teachers in the field that this school is bilingual, they react with surprise. This structure does not exist otherwise in Japan, yet its need is very apparent. At ILH we strive to instill pride in the students’ own heritage as a Japanese person while at the same time opening their eyes to other cultures and instilling in them a global awareness. We believe this is necessary for each of them to be able to cope in this modern global society.
The results I’ve witnessed as a reaction to this way of teaching have been phenomenal. The children behave with an awareness and genuine care for their peers and are keen to react to subtleties of their environment. When speaking English, they are able to take what they are exposed to daily and apply it to their own expression. It may not always be correctly stated, but we are not striving for perfection. Confidence has far more value and is the currency of this school.
This first class is the prototype and has set an example that all future classes can strive toward. The students of this class have open hearts and experience new things the world has to offer with excitement and fervor. At the same time, they are socially adept and treat others with kindness as their elders do. This kindness that Japan is famous for is short in supply among today’s youth, but I’m glad to see it still blossom under the right conditions.
As a teacher, I’m sad to see these students leave the nest. What lies for them beyond their experience here at Language House is out of my control. All I can hope for is that what they’ve learned has become so deeply innate now that they can never lose it and that they find the guidance they need through their lives. I am confident their wonderful parents will help navigate through the uncertain road that lies ahead.
Sakurako, Kohei, Mimia- you are all ready now for the next step. Please never forget Languge House and what you’ve learned here. Can you remember your first days at ILH? Do you realize how you’ve grown since? I’m sure the answer is yes, just as I’m sure your futures are bright as you embark on you journey into the great big world.
